The city of Vigo is the gateway to exploring the Illas Cíes, the jewel of the national park comprising an archipelago of Atlantic islands off Galicia’s western coast. These pristine islands, reachable from the city by ferry, boast untouched nature as well as some of the best beaches in all of Spain. They are perfect for a day trip or for overnight camping, if you apply for your permit in advance. Read on for a guide to exploring these magnificent islands and the city, too.

Praia de Rodas
This beach has been cited as one of the best in the world, and it’s easy to see why.

The beach forms a C-shape connecting Illa de Monteagudo and Illa do Faro, with unbelievably soft white sand and brilliantly blue waters. It’s tempting to spend the whole day right here, but there is a lot to explore on these islands. If you decide to camp and spend the night, you can do just that.

Pedra da Campá
This unique rock formation is the result of erosion caused by millennia of whipping, salt-filled winds coming off the Atlantic. Located at roughly the highest point of Illa do Faro, this spot offers breathtaking views of the islands and the ocean beyond.

The verdant green of the lush islands up against the steely gray of the rocky cliffs and the deep blue of the ocean is truly an epic sight to behold.

Faro de Cíes
This lighthouse is one of two that gives this particular island its name. In operation since the 1850s, it is another great lookout point for sweeping views in every direction.

Faro da Porta
The island’s other lighthouse is located down the hill and offers a nice view across the strait toward Illa de San Martiño, the southernmost of the three islands. The very pleasant walking trails here lead you right along the edge of the water.

Praia de Nosa Señora
On your way from the lighthouse back toward Praia de Rodas, stop off at this lovely little stretch of sand for a dip in crystal-clear waters.

Vigo
Back in the city, enjoy the onset of the evening on the terraza of one of the bars of the lively Praza da Constitución in the heart of the Casco Vello (old town). Be sure to order Estrella Galicia, the regional beer brewed in A Coruña that is arguably Spain’s best. For dinner, check out Porto Santo for some classic Galician fare.
