Rio is one of the world’s foremost beach cities, and the lifestyle of the carioca is inextricably linked to the praia. The beach is a way of life here, and it is a shame to let a sunny day go by without at least a little time spent on the sand. Read on for a guide to some of the city’s best beaches.

Praia Vermelha
This small beach is in a gorgeous location, wedged in between the giant green peaks that define Rio’s coastline. With an incredible view of Pão de Açúcar, this beach is perfect for swimming as it sits on an inlet, protected from the strong waves of the waters of Zona Sul. Come early in the day to secure a good spot, as the small space fills up fast.

Praia do Leblon
While still located in the heart of Zona Sul, Leblon’s beach offers relative calm compared to its more crowded and raucous neighbors Ipanema and Copacabana. You’ll still have your fair share of roaming vendors and crowds of umbrellas, but there is plenty of space to relax and enjoy the stunning view of the twin peaks of Dois Irmãos.

Praia da Gávea
Also known as Praia de São Conrado, this long stretch of sand enjoys the breathtaking backdrop of the giant monolith Pedra da Gávea. This is a fabulous beach with a real tranquility—just west of Leblon and Ipanema, but it feels like a world away. For me, it offers the best combination of natural beauty and accessibility.

Praia da Joatinga
This hidden beach, inside of a semi-gated community and accessible by a short walk down a steep set of stairs and rocks, is totally unique among Rio’s mostly smooth, flat coastline. In fact, its rocky setting seems more akin to the Pacific than the Atlantic. Nevertheless, this is a place to escape in nature, far removed from the crowds and the chaos. Just be sure to check the tides before going, as the beach basically disappears at high tide.

Praia de Grumari
Far to the west, well past Barra da Tijuca, Grumari is a stretch of pristine, untouched coastline with nothing but green and blue in all directions. The beach is totally natural—so natural, in fact, that some sections of it are reserved for nudists on the weekends. There is plenty of space here for everyone, however, and you won’t regret making the trek out from the city.
